View Full Version : Repairing a pickup tailgate
11-05-2007, 03:49 PM
I have a 65 Ford Econoline pickup that has a tailgate that is bulged out due to loading and unloading of materails. The bulge is in the area of the "FORD" lettering and covers pretty much the central portion of that panel. The bulge is approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep. My question is what would be the best method for getting the area back to a flat panel with the lettering still intact?

I have one of them myself and I plan on tapping the dents between hammer and dolly until the panel is fairly flat then using a little filler to finish the job. Leveling metal near the lettering will probably be done by using the pointed end of a pick hammer (below) so that the force can be directed to a very small area. The force of the hit is usually a lot of light hits so that more damage is not created. Once the metal is worked the surface is ground using a 24 or 36 grit grinding disk and filler is delicately applied around the lettering.
