Allright I am slowly knocking out the body work on my VW type 3 but by reading some of these forums I realized that I am not that well equiped or do I have the knowledge to do this properly. I have some questions about the body filler and the application process. The paint on my car is in pretty good shape but it has the usual dents and dings and light rust. I have been taking the paint down to the metal to use my filler and then I sand it out all pretty like. Now what? I can see some small pits here and there in the filler. Is this when I use the polyester glazing putty? and the for the time being can I prime with rattle can primer?

Finishing glaze is much more liquid and less prone to pinholes. If you prime over those pinholes it will be very diffiult to fill them and they can com back to haunt you later down the process...

Once you have sanded your filler flat, put a small coat of glaze and sand it flat again. I like to finish the glaze with P180 prior to priming. Leaving deeper scratches in the filler before the primer is not a good idea...

Rattle can primer is to be avoided at all cost...buy a good quality primer. I like sandable epoxies such as Valspar's DTM2000 series primer. Its the only one you need to buy...it goes direct onto metal and is a surfacing primer at the same time...

There is an excellent how to section on this site that was contributed by one of the resident pros...Martinsr...

There is alot of info on the complete refinish process there...
