View Full Version : Foam block for final sanding?

I keep sanding through my top layer of 2k primer to either filler below or epoxy. I was using a regular 5" block with my 400. I guess I'm still being too agressive. Should I be using just a foam block and a gentle hand for this final sanding prior to paint?

I'm dry sanding by the way....

Hey G , are you guide coating ? Also I would use as long a block as I could . Using just a 5 inch block it seems to me you could not get it as flat . But what do I know lol .

Hey Earl,

I've guide coated and used 180 on a long block several times while respraying 2k. I'm just wanting the sand the final coat with 400 prior to paint and was wanting a consistent color surface. I just keep going to far to expose lower layers...

thanks

If you keep going through to your lower layers maybe the panel isnt flat enough.

However, I would put another 2 coats or so on of 2k. Then get a 9 inch block and use it with 500.
Guide coat it and sand away.

Using a 5" block is usually not good for overall leveling unless the area being leveled is quite small, like a door ding. In most cases you'll want at least an 8"or 10" block and the larger the damage the larger the block that is needed. Once the surface is level the 5" block can be used to block the primer to remove minor surface irregularities.

If the high spots are popping through before the guide coat is gone then the low spots are still too low and need more filling to get the surface level. You may be better off using a liquid form of polyester putty, like Evercoat's Easy Sand, if the low spots are too low for primer but not low enough for a paste-like filler. Easy Sand can be spread quite smoothly and (as the name implies) sands easily.
