Len, I have a former student that is looking to purchase a new gun. He is currently "borrowing" one of my w-400 Iwata's with a 1.4 tip. He's got plenty of air supply, so that's not a problem. Here's what I can come up with from your site and my experience.

Sata 2000 or RP--Great guns, highest price, built tough but also has highest replacement parts cost

Iwata 400 series--high price, great performance (my personal favorite), possibly somewhat fragile compared to SATA? That might only be perception, as I own both and it's easy to be mislead by weight=well built...only problems I've had with mine have been human error (dropped/damaged fluid tip)

Devilbiss Plus--a lot of gun/tips for the money, I have no experience with this gun. My only experience with Devilbiss is the old JGA's

Sharpe Titanium--Lots of performance for the money. As you may remember, I bought a Titanium/cobalt combo kit from you a couple years ago...The Titanium performs well, but sees VERY little use. Do you have any deals on Sharpes right now? Maybe a Titanium/platinum combo or something?

If my guy had ABOUT 400 bucks to spend, and you knew he wasn't the best at maintaining equipment, is there a certain gun you'd recommend? One of the above? Others? 3 Finishlines? ha:rolleyes:

BTW, Have you seen the w-400 knockoffs on the market? I bought one from a roving vendor a couple months ago. I've used it to spray a couple of cars. It's not quite as nice a the real deal, but it's not bad...I noticed the machine work is not quite as precise, as the air cap needs to be very snug (and sometimes rotated 180) to get an even pattern. But like I said, it wasn't too bad.

Let me know

Why not sell the Sharpe guns that perform well but "that see very little use" to your student? Am I missing something here that's not obvious.

I'm not spraying every week like I was a while back and I haven't had the time or opportunity to use the Sharpe guns however from the feedback I get they seem to spray well. I have sprayed with just about all of the newer DeVilbiss guns and all of the Sata guns and now I'm spraying with the new Dura-Block guns. I don't know what you have in mind money wise but the Dura-Blocks spray really well for the money but the 007 is like purchasing three high end guns for the price of two while the GMS is a good mid-range gun. With the price of the GMS guns you could almost purchase a spotting gun and a full size gun for the price of a good Sharpe.

A good apprentice gun is the Sata jet 90-2. They list for about $320.00. They spray really nice for the price and the person that buys the gun is still getting Sata quality.

Actually, I never thought about selling him my Sharpe setup, as I've never sold a tool in my life...given away plenty, but never sold. What I had more in mind was him buying a gun from Len.

I may ask him to try my Sharpe T1cg and see how he likes it. I'd love to get my Iwata back soon.

Thanks, any more comments are certainly welcome.

hi everyone! I'm a beginner myself and have this crazy things about buying different gun to try. my brother think I'm crazy by not sticking with one spray gun.... my first gun was the devilbiss plus, and it's still my best gun. all the high dollor gun out there is good, but finding the one gun that fit your style is pretty hard.... I spray fast, so the plus fit me pretty good. my brother swear he love the iwata lph 400, but it spray kinda fun for me, sharpe t1 is not good for clear and it take way to much air from my compressor, but ok for base, bink m1g and geo fx 97 is too slow, sata nr 95 is nice, and the gti 620 is nice also, but not as great as the plus, my next gun is the sata rp because i heard it a fast production gun....if I have to pick my first gun again, I would go with the devilbiss gti 620 because it have 3 different tips and it's a hvlp gun so it have more control. Maybe the reason that I go around the car so fast is because my first gun is the plus... I pick the plus because of the cfm rating on my old compressor is low...like I said before, I'm a beginner myself....hope this help.....

What?
The Sharpe T1 - assuming the compliant version - is about as good a clear gun as you can get according to all those who have used it.
They do take a lot of air though.

The Sharpe T-1 CG takes 11 CFM @ 30 PSI. The HVLP version takes 13.5 CFM.

sorry, I do own a T1 hvlp gun:o and to tell you the truth, I didn't even know my gun was made by sharpe until I needed replacement part because mine was a snap on spray gun. ... from then on, I stay away from all sharpe gun. I have a 1.5 and a 1.3 setup and had try clear with both, but with bad result.... yes, it possible for me to spray a ok finish with it, but I have to focus very very hard during the whole time. now I use it for primer...

First off the gun in your quote isn't a HVLP. Second I would suggest you learn how to spray. I can't stand guys like you who can't spray a lick but knock good products. Your a joke man. Mooch

sorry about the bad grammer. It came out wrong....what I mean was I own a hvlp verson I should have read over what I wrote before I sent it out, I wasn't saying anything bad about the compliant version. I was just stating my bad experience with the hvlp version of the t1. didn't mean to upset you. but like I said before, I'm a beginner and wanting to learn from experience painter like yourself. I do use my devilbiss plus for clear and gti 620 for base.

You don't need to be insulting because someone may not be as much of an expert as you. You should be asking questions and not be degrading. People visit this site for answers and to tell of their experiences not to be flamed.
