View Full Version : pinhole rust repair

I've got a patch I need to put into the floor of my '60 Impala under the rear seat. I cut a usable piece out of a parts car, but its not perfect. It has some pinholes in it, and I really don't want to buy a brand new panel unless I have to. What would be the recommended repair method for this? I hate to use fiberglass mat, since if anybody ever saw it they would jump to conclusions, assuming it to be a red-neck floor pan (newspaper and fiberglass). Suggestions are appreciated as always.
To tell you the truth Dave I wouldn't use that piece of metal. The pin holes are telling you that the metal is weak and new metal should be used to replace it. If you want the repair to last then use a solid piece of metal and if it doesn't matter then just throw some fiberglass filler over the holes after it's installed but filler won't be as strong or hold up as well as a good metal replacement.

Thanks Len, I will give that some consideration. I don't want to cut corners, considering the total cost of restoration in the end, another $100 patch panel is no big deal. Just as an experiment I treated the panel on both sides with Picklex-20, then brushed some Zero-Rust on the top side nice'n thick. It filled all the tiny pinholes. The panel is really nice on the bottom side because it was coated heavily with undercoating from the original dealer back in '60. After I got the undercoating off, it still had paint on it. If I were to use this panel... of course it would get coated on the bottom too along with the rest of the floor. Would this repair remain water-tight for the long term, or will the ZR not hold up?

I agree with Len, and as it seems you care about the car and your work, I would either fabricate a new piece or pop for the replacement.
So, do it right and sleep right. Other wise do it quick an dirty, then sell it and not sleep so good.
