"Bondo" might have been the 1st generation plastic filler, but, so many more manufactureres has far surpased Bondo it isnt funny. Now its just a generic term for body filler. I pretty much stay away from that brand. It will do the job though.

What have the other companies done that make their product so much better than "Bondo" brand?

I can't think of a single time I've seen Bondo brand in a bodyshop... I use Evercoat.. except for FG & for that I use 3M shortstrand because that stuff (unlike Marglass etc) spreads like butter.

Not sure. I'm not a chemist, but I can tell the difference in products by how they spread and sand. Marson is the best I've found so far for finish work. I like ever coat Z grip for initial filling

The best filler I've found for filling and sandability is Rage Gold and the best for spreading on smooth is Rage Extreme. We use both, the Gold for the initial steps then the Extreme for the final coats. In most cases the Extreme will do away with the need for polyester putty.

What kind of putty is the extreme? Also, is polyester putty out of date or what is the reason for wanting to get rid of it?

the extreme, if it's like the marson, is so smooth and creamy, and adheres to paint well, that it pretty much does what the polly does. It's not out dated, just real expensive compared to a finishing type filler

it also prevents solvent bleed thru and holds out moisture better than filler, but much more expensive as 88gt stated. I didn't know extreme adhered good to paint. No need for metalglaze if that's true. I also heard it's pinhole free, like metalglaze.

Not sure if extreme does, but marson does, and it doesnt pinhole. I use way less metal glaze now

Rage Extreme is a body filler that is more liquid than most others. We still use polyester putty when the job calls for it. There are many types of putty just like there are many types of body filler and each has it's pros and cons. We keep several around the shop but (right now) we use Euro-Soft and Easy Sand more than any others.

I believe you have that backwards. Bondo Corporation has several different brands under it's wing .

I like Bondo products have used them for 50 years .

Google BONDO and you will see what I mean .

Mooch :)

Thanks Len, I think I'll order some of this stuff today.

I haven't done body work in some time and used regular Bondo years ago.

The only problem I've ever had with staining was about 20 years ago in cold weather when I mixed in too much hardner. This cause the filler to bleed pink through my silver paint but I've never had that problem since. I use a lot of different types of filler in order to evaluate their performance, some cheap some expensive and I usually find that YGWYPF.
