I have just started a 1942 ford truck lots of rust mostly surface. I got a gallon of Ospho today and it says to let dry over night and paint. Is there any thing that I can put on and not have to paint for say about a year while I slowly finish this project.

etch or epoxy but not sure how it'll work with your rust converter.

so should I do away with the ospho and just sand? then I what can I do while I sand small parts at a time to keep rust away?

Try to sand it all off and either use a acid conditioner w/ conversion coat or epoxy/etch once the converter is on there. A convertor seals it and eliminates further rust formation in rusted areas. Epoxy and etch protects it from the elements. I imagine you have to let the convertor cure before you apply primer. Not sure if you have to remove excess amounts or sand for bite, etc. Might be a good idea to read the tutorial on this site regarding that. I've never used a convertor but plan too. It sounds like an easier way to fix rust issues, especially deep rust. I've noticed really cheap hotrod in Seattle but they all seem to be rust buckets so I'll be real familiar with that stuff soon.

I would sand the surface as clean as possible then use a rust converter (I would recommend Picklex 20), allow the surface to dry then scuff and apply epoxy primer that has no acid in it. Acid in your primer can cause it to react poorly with the rust converter.
A couple of coats of decent epoxy primer should hold up well for quite a while and when you're ready to paint you can sand and recoat.
Etch primer will also protect the metal but not as good as epoxy primer and etch cannot be used over a rust converter/metal conditioner.
