I'm sanding a rear axle that is a little pitted and I'm wondering if I cand apply zero rust and sand between coats to smooth the pitting?

Yes, you can sand Zero Rust but you've got to apply it in thin coats, allow it to dry well then sand and reapply. ZR is a product that needs to DRY not harden and laying it on wet will trap solvents in the coating which cause it to stay soft for a long time. It's usually best to use a HARDENED primer or paint if you want to fill minor surface imperfections but ZR will work when used properly.
