what is the difference between the Hookit and Hookit II pads or systems ?
what is the difference between the Hookit and Hookit II pads or systems ?
In it's wisdom 3m switched the hooks from the pad to the paper so when you purchase any Hook-it II products you also need to use a Hook-It II pad and once you switch to a Hook-It II pad you can only use 3M sandpaper on it. When it comes to function there is no difference, it's just a marketing ploy.

The hookit 2 film is hard to beat in performance but easy to beat in price. I use it on the nicer cars

I like Hookit II for a couple of reasons.
1) I've ruined several conventional hookit pads by trying to sand with then when there was no sandpaper attached to them. A couple of seconds and the hookit pad loses it's hooks and it's dead. With Hookit II the fuzz is not affected by this stupid move so I don't destroy the pads. Yea, I know it's my fault but hey I'm forgetfull.
2) The plastic film that they must attach to the paper to enable them to form the hooks on the back of it makes the material very tear resistant.
3) It has a better cushion than conventional hookit so you get fewer swirls.
4) The paper stays put and doesn't move around as much in the Hookit II system. It's easier to put on and easier to take off than conventional hookit.
5) That stated it is of course a lock them in marketing ploy by the evil 3M but like most of there stuff it truly does do the job. Is it worth the money 3M charges for it. Of course not.

You can use everyone's sandpaper with a hook and loop pad but you can only use 3M sandpaper with Hook It II. The function is about the same. I don't use Hook It II as a matter of principle but if, for some reason, I needed to use a 3M product that only came in II then I'd purchase a pad and use it. Once you start using hook and loop or Hook It II doesn't mean you're stuck with it, you can always purchase the other backing plate if you want to use the other.
