Should I not use an ingun filter for high build?

I have an issue with not enough material comming out of my Durablock HVLP 7003 gun. I've only shot using MP182 and FeatherFill. I have my material knob wide open but still its just not coming out quick at all. Could it be that the little screen filters that sit between the cup and the gun are slowing down the flow since these are thicker paints?

I cant even use those filters for my clear coats cause the plasticizers fill them up.

I filter the material first, then have a filter on the end in my pressure pot. On certain finishes I have a filter in the gun as well but a newer one I am using will clog the gun filter and that is while it is under 15 pounds fluid pressure.

THe car guys will tell you here but I don't think those things work well with gravity feed guns, I hardly ever use gravity feed but when I do i filter the material first then once again before I pour it in the cup and do not use those little filters.

I agree with the guys above...and especially with high build which you will be sanding out. If in doubt, strain it twice....filters are cheap.

The first thing we do when we get a new gun is remove the filter in the cup or between the cup and the gun. These filters can cause too much restriction and make the gun spray poorly.

Well I gave it a whirl without the filter and nothing seemed to change. :(
The material just doesnt want to come out at anything resembling an acceptable rate. I'm using a 1.7 tip and thats within the recommended range on the can. Its the bottom end of that recommendation but still, its in the range. I know someone who uses the same size on a non-HVLP gravity feed and I've seen it come flying out at a far higher volume with the dropplets a more proper, far smaller size.

I'm getting some sputtering when I turn the pressure up high, and it goes away if I pull the swivel joint under the cup out of the equation. So, I'll try another time sans the joint and see if anything improves. I welcome any other ideas though.

hmm are you sure youre mixing everything correctly, and is your vent hole blocked?

hmm.. I'm sure the vent hole was clear when I previously cleaned it, but I dont believe I looked when I was trying to spray. The gun has never sprayed properly though, this has always been a problem, so I'm sure its been clear at some point along my attempted usage. =)

Ya, I'm mixing it right. Another more experience guy who has used featherfill many times before was there and saw me mix it. Plus after it didnt work in my gun we quick poured it in his gun and it came out dandy. It was the same problem with the MP182 as well. I just moved really slow for full coverage and sanded the buttload of extreme orange peel out.

1.7 tip is a little small for spraying a thick material like featherfill. I'd try a larger tip maybe a 2.0 or so. I know when i went from a 1.8 to a 2.0 it was a huge difference.
Also try narrowing the spray a little. You can also reduce it a little as well. I believe featherfill reccomends to reduce with laquer thinner.

how does the gun spray thinner? it sounds to me that something is clogged somewhere, i would probably completely disassemble the ENTIRE thing, and check over every part to make sure its manufactured and cleaned properly

If Featherfill is like Slick Sand, then you should thin it at least %10 with acetone. I tried to spray it with a 2.2 tip and STILL had problems.:mad:
