I've been looking locally for a good used compressor to replace the dinky 12 gallon Craftsman that I have in my garage now. I found a "Charge Air Pro", made by DeVillbis. It is an 80 gallon tank, says "6.5 HP". It is a 2 stage pump with 175psi output. I didn't see flow spec's on it. I searched the web and found almost nothing about this compressor. Is anyone familliar with it?
It appears to be in good shape physically, pumps up and doesn't make any strange noises. The seller is asking $500.
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks
MIke M.
If this is a used compressor I would want to hear and see it run plus blow some air and let it go on and off a couple times.

Len,
Could you tell me what to look for, listen for, in that instance?
If it is functioning correctly, does that sound like a reasonable price?
Also, any particular exposure to that brand of compressor?
Thanks again

I've never purchased a used compressor so I can't give many tips but I'd think that it's a lot like buying a car. Listen for any hammering in the pump, make sure there's no excess vibration in the pulleys or belts. Keep your fingers crossed when you get it home. If it works well it will be a good buy but if not then it's an expensive (and large) piece of trash.
Maybe Phil could chime in if he catches this thread.

Watch our for rusty tanks, that problem will render your compressor purchase pretty worthless. Good luck

I have an older Devilbiss that is similar to that one. Mine has a 7.5 baldor motor and has worked great for over 15 years. If it runs up to pressure and has a mag starter I would buy it. Mooch

Check the motor current draw. The motor should look like a big motor and should have a tag on it showing 6.5HP and it should draw over 22 amps. My true 5HP draws 22 amps and current draw is directly related to true HP. The low cost compressor use SPL HP ratings. They generate 6.5 HP on start up and are really just like a 3 HP motor.
A low cost compressor is not worth the $500.
A real 6.5 HP is worth the $$, but first make sure everything is tight. Mine the guy was getting rid of it because it would not put out the air. The main shaft was tight, but when I got it home I found all the bolts on the head were loose.
Good luck.
