Painting over silver zinc

I want to change the silver zinc sway bar just shipped new to me to a cast finish. I am using plasti-kote enamel spray can. Do I use a etching primer as told by a sales person who sold me the paint? what are the steps for doing this? This is a restoration project so I want to get it right.
