I went to the local jobber to get some Standox basecoat and their 2k clear. I've brought Dupont Chromabase and Premier from him and figure Standox is part of Dupont so how much can it be?

Well I mean to say, a 5 liter can of 2K clear is $250.00 (they only sell that size), I got a break on the basecoat (it was like $50 for 1/2 a pint).

By the time you added in the thinners, activators and reducers the bill for supplies was over $600.00. This btw was for just a Brilliant Black car, no Pearl or anything fancy.

I went to bodyshop at the dealership where I brought my Audi from and got an estimate to repair the spot on the hood for $300.00 (paint damage no collison).

Man nothing from Germany is cheap here.

Yep, they're expensive but they work well. I've been using Glasurit materials for about 15 years and every time I use a less expensive product it reinforces my reasons for using the high priced spread. I was using several different products from low to high priced but have pretty much surrendered to using only high-end materials because it's cheaper in the long run. Of course I'm spraying all the time and I don't have left over material because I continuously use it. If I were only doing one mid-range job I might opt for less expensive paint but for spraying continuously I find the better materials much more forgiving and easier to fix if I make a mistake.

Yeah I can understand a body shop owner using the quality stuff, I would expect nothing less. The Audi Shop will be using Spies Hecker.

But 5 liters is like 1 gallon + 1 quart of clear. Alot of money for one shot paint job and the rest to sit in the paint cabinet for awhile

I may still get their 2K System. I mean most paint products have a pretty good shelf life if sealed properly and un-activated.

I guess if you want to run with the big dogs you gotta play thier game.
