so i finished wet-sanding a motorcycle and laid down the paint and clear on sunday.

i would describe the result as nice... but it's not perfect. it's a two-tone scheme... orange over cream and i learned an important lesson about masking over light colours. don't use newspaper, it's leave dark smudges on the light colour. i fixed as much as i could before laying the clear... but there's a couple spots i'm not happy with - mostly because they were so avoidable.

i'm thinking about sanding the clear above the cream on the tank and re-spraying the base colour and clear over top. is that feasible or do you have to sand back down to primer before laying basecoat?

also, i had planned to be able to spray everything in daylight on sunday, but things took longer than i'd hoped and i ended up having to spray the clear in very poor lighting. that left me with a few runs to repair and more orange peel than i would have hoped. i don't have a buffing rig yet, so i may try fine sanding and laying more clear over top - see how that works out.

anyway... looking for advice to fix the smudges and whether i can lay basecoat on top of sanded clear.

Yes you can scuff sand and shoot more base over the clear , *generally* the only time you'll have trouble is if you break through the clear when sanding, then the new base can cause wrinkling and lifting around the edge where you broke through.

thanks, that's good to know.

i'm wavering between leaving well enough alone and laying down some more basecoat right now. i'll wait to decide until i'm standing in front of it again.

just dont hog on the base or it may lift on you. lighter coats are cheap insurance.
