specifically TS4L5, 60 gal, 15.5 acfm@175 psi, all cast iron components

i bought a 60 gal single stage Kobalt from Lowes in july only to have it make god awful sounds and actually seize temporarily(off and on),used very little, either way im getting rid of it, Lowes said they would deliver a new one and pick up the old one free of charge but i dont think i want another of the same, they said they could get me an Ingersol two stage 60 gal TS4L5 for $954 delivered

is it a good compressor, i really wanted a 2 stage from the start so i am leaning this way, any input is welcome, thanks guys

I believe that the IR TS line is their less expensive (built overseas?) line carried by discount chains. I bought and really like my IR 7 1/2 hp T30 2 stage. Cost was $1900 delivered. The T30 line is celebrating it's 75th anniversary. I wanted to finally get a good compressor. I am very happy withj the machine. It will stay with either my large sandblast cabinet or my Lindsey pressure pot. The compressor is outside my heated workshop area to eliminate any noise issues.

I like that contradictory statement near the end..."OPTIONAL start-up kit is REQUIRED for proper operation and warranty."

Some folks don't mind what I consider the staggering cost of IR's synthetic oil. I do. I prefer a compressor that will operate on plain engine oil.

Its also important to find out if the magnetic starter comes with the compressor or is that another "necessary accessory" ? The magnetic starter is similar to a starter solenoid on a car. Saves burning up on the compressor motor on/off main switch as well as the high/low cut in/cut out switch. Those true 5hp electric motors can draw as much as 60 amps on startup which would fry a normal on/off switch and a high/low cut in/cut out switch.
I payed close to $200 for the magnetic starter box 20 years ago for my Quincy 5hp 80 gallon compressor (and I payed $1800 for that compressor 20 years ago).

I had done quite a bit of research and decided to buy the same unit until I found a lightly used 5 HP IR compressor in the older style with the V compressor for only $500.

Mine gets used for hobby work only. When I run the sandblast cabinet it runs pretty hard. When using the Devilbiss plus gun it hardly runs at all.

I don't think IR is about to compromise their brand by putting out a poor quality unit. You can get off brand units for less, but you get what you pay for.

I have never regretted paying for a good tool, but I have, more than once, regretted buying a cheap one. I think that unit is great value for hobby use that requires a good deal of air.

I bought the same unit in 1999-2000 for $850. An autoshow special. Never had a spec of trouble with it. Used it a lot sandblasting and painting my old Chevelle. Think this will be my last compressor. It's a v-twin and takes 220 current. Had to install a 30 amp breaker for start up. Uses 30 weight NON detergent oil.
Good luck.

thanks guys, since they will pick up my old unit and deliver a new one my choices with them are to get the same kobalt 60 gal single stage, get a porter cable 60 gal ss, or this one and pay the difference which is what i will do, thanks for your input
