OK. Some of you guys sold me on spraying instead of rolling on primer. Someone recommended using a cheapie spray gun from Harbor Freight which I may purchase anyway but I got to thinking. Most of what I have to spray is going to be of narrow widths (i.e. rain gutters, repaired dings, window channels, etc). BUT, I also need to prime the whole front nose of my VW bus as well. Could I get away with doing this with a cheapie detail gun or a regular sized gun??? Which would be best for all applications of primer?? ORRRRRR should I just cough up the extra $$$ for both cheapies???? Opinions??

Thanks!

Len sells some economical guns (well as economical as spray guns can be).

Len pretty much as worked with any gun he sells (even the low end ones) so you'll get some hands on advice. Of course others here have shopped HF and I suppose you can get feedback on a particular gun from them.

I have a Devibliss SRi-W Spot gun and love it. I have shot entire front bumpers with it as well as doing spot/blending work with it.

Have sprayed Epoxy and 2k High-build Primer-Filler with it and the always lays the paint down correct.

Personally, I have found over the several years I've been enjoying this hobby that trying to save some bucks on equipment (buying small compressors, or cheapie spray guns, and the like) is not worth the savings. You usually end up with more hassels and fustrations than the cost savings were worth.

That's not to say all low priced guns are crap, but some tools I would rather buy from someone who's known for making them and making them reasonably well.

I would probably opt for a mid-range small gun with an optional tip like the Dura-Block 7004 GMS gun. This gun comes with a 1.0 tip which will work with most epoxy and 2K primers and I would also recommend getting a 1.2 tip kit to spray materials that could be a little heavier.

The 1.2 fluid tip for the 7004 can be found HERE (http://autobodystore.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=DB7004parts&Category_Code=2DBSG) for $16.50.

Pictured below DeVilbiss has just come out with a new small gun but I haven't used it yet. This new gun costs $74.95 and comes with a 1.0 tip. This is brand new and not on the site yet but I can get it for you if you call 1-888-485-5008.

Below is one of our least expensive guns is the Astro AS6S that costs $33.50

So, is it everyones advice that using a smaller gun would be the correct choice? Is this because a smaller gun has smaller pattern or what?? Thanks again!!

Not only the pattern size, but the smaller guns are easier to handle when working with small or tight spaces and use less air pressure (less overspray).

Small guns are great for spraying small surfaces but it's more difficult to get an even primer or paint coating on larger surfaces. A bumper cover may seem large but, if you think about it, it's made up of a lot of small surfaces and angles that won't take a lot of overlapping passes.
