I keep having a problem spraying high build primer. No matter what I set the gun at (HF with 1.4), it always seems to dry before it hits the surface. The only way for me to get it even close to "wet" is spraying about 1 inch from the surface - which then leads to massive amounts of material bulking up, runs and huge ripples. I have tried all different methods of PSI and distances and spray patterns. nothing helps. Do I have to buy a primer gun with a larger tip?

Up onto this point I have used about a gallon of high build primer on the rear quarter panels and trunklid. This seems very excessive. I know most of it has been sanded off, as all over the back of the car i have hit the epoxy. Not to mention my driveway looks like a powder sand lot. :(

Please advise, thank you!:)

Trent , I'm no expert by far but high build primer in my opinion needs at least a 2.0 tip. the 1.4 is way to small in my book . You may even get the results you want with a 1.8 tip . I have seen guys that will only use a 2.2 tip for high build but to each his own. Hope this helps ya .

Most non-high build primers can be sprayed using a 1.4 tip but there are many heavier products that need a larger tip. Almost anything you spray on the vehicle will need to be sprayed WET, if you spray it dry you could see it release from the surface as the finish ages.

I would get a different gun or fluid tip or change primers. You must also be sure that you are mixing the correct amount of reducer with the primer if the primer calls for it. If you tell us the type of primer you're using there may be someone here that can give you some tips on it's application.

It says there...1.5 - 2.2. So you should be able to spray it with a 1.4

It also says that it can be sprayed with or without a reducer...do if it is reduced, you should definitely be able to spray it.

If you are not reducing it, maybe give that a try. I know my Dupont primer sprays good on the first coat, but the later coats, it tend to get a bit thick.

I have done it both ways, and both ways it didn't spray well.

I saw that they say you can run a 1.5 tip, but I don't believe it! HAHA :)

Thank you fellas,

I saw a big difference when I went from a 1.5 to a 1.8. My coat was much wetter with the larger tip. I got a 2.3 tip and will be using that next time.

I also made a mistake with the high build primer by letting it sit too long before spraying. The pot life is very short and it started to set up in the gun while I was spraying and it came out very dry...

I also noticed that....i tried to squirt that $hit as fast as possible :)

the primer wants a 15 min flash time -- noticed you almost can't do that! If you run one of those little white filters in the gun it will clog that usually in 5 min...haha :)

Thanks for the notice on the 1.5 -> 1.8 tip. I think that is going to be my solution!

That little white filter could be your problem if your using it. If you are remove it and throw it away. Mooch

I have never used the primer you posted . I use Quicksand Poly and Kirker epoxy . I shoot all my epoxy with an Astro LVLP 1.4 tip and all my poly with a LVLP 1.8 tip Astro. However I think a 1.4 tip is way to small for high build primer. JMO Mooch
