its not just the size of the flake but how much you put into the clear and how many layers you spray on.. I like flake and kandy...LOL
experiment with it first so you get used to using it and what it looks like when you use a certain amount or too much

1. If the parts are painted before you start you don't need primer, just scuff, clean and shoot. If the parts are bare plastic you should scuff lightly then apply adhesion promoter before applying color.
2. If the paint is metallic then use a base/clear but if your base coat is a solid color you can use a single stage urethane. After the metallic is applied you want to apply a couple of coats of straight clear to sand and polish.
3. Get the products you plan on using and spray some test panels to determine the number of coats that give you the effect you like. Guess work rarely works well.
4. When spraying large flake you may need a larger fluid tip and a detail gun usually has a small tip. You could try your small gun but I think you'll find that you need a 1.4 or larger tip to lay the metallic on evenly. This will be another variable determined by spraying test panels.

Can anyone tell me why the black rubber trim around my windshield and windows turned white after my paint job??

Could be adhesive from masking tape. Could be buffing compound. Could be a reaction to chemicals used to clean up the rubber. Could be sand scratches from running a sander on the rubber. Did you paint it yourself? I think we need more information.

Did it happen all over the rubber or just in one area?

For the most part the driver side window and a little bit on the center top part of the windshield trim. Also there are a lot of tiny white spots on the trim around the rear view window on my hardtop that won't wipe off. It's a 1995 Miata I had it painted at Maaco.

It almost looks like the rubber was primed or painted then painted black to make it look good again then the masking tape pulled off the black. Try putting some masking tape on the rubber and pulling it off to see if black paint comes off with it. There is a stain that will color the rubber called Forever Black (http://www.autogeek.net/foreverblack.html?gclid=CK-H-cbi8K4CFSoGRQodpTyuKA) that comes in an application bottle, you can get it online.
