I am restoring an old 1986 Toyota 4Runner which has sliding glass rear windows that are installed into the fiberglass cover as a complete unit.

I removed the rear sliding glass window units to paint the vehicle. According to the Toyota service manual, these window units are to be installed using 1/4" wide "butyl tape" with plastic trim channel retainers on the inside. I'm not having much luck finding "butyl tape"...What modern product can be used to install these window units? I'm looking at using Lord Fusor #171 clear two-sided tape. I don't want them falling out. Anyone have any other recommendations?

Just about any automotive glass place with still stock butyl tape and you can also order it from most automotive paint stores. When they say butyl tape don't confuse that with a flat ribbon type two sided tape. The butyl "tape" is actually almost round and come wrapped up in a coil with paper separator to keep it from sticking to itself. I gues you could substitue butyl tape with butyl caulk IF you applied it correctly.

The 3M tape comes in 1/4" by 15' and cost $13.

I'm almost positive NAPA sells buytl tape,{I know they sell butyl caulking,which should work also}
You COULD use urethane to install,but if you EVER have to remove it,will be a real bear.
Good Luck!

Do you have a 3M product number? How do I find it at AutoBodyStore.com? This tape isn't the same as 3M's 08578 "Strip-Calk" is it?
