Today I cut a section out of my parts car Rambler American for my two door. This car has 54k original miles with original paint and very little rust, a super solid car. That is all but the drivers side floor board, it is GONE. The brake master cylinder bracket bolts to the underside of the floor so it too is rusted and bent all to hell because the floor didn't support it properly.
When I removed the piece on the top of the cowl I found out why just this one spot had so much rust. How about a hole from the factory where a spot weld blew a piece of metal away! This car had a leak from the factory that was never fixed!

And you got pissed at me for calling it a rust bucket . BTW I have seen much worse then that .

I was "pissed"? I doubt it. Besides, this is my parts car, not my driver I'm building.

Oh heck yeah the driver has rust too, not as severe but yes it has it, what is your point? Listen, for a California car, these cars are "rust buckets" as many are better. In the rust belt or the east coast this sucker is like brand new! It is all perspective, yeah I am fixing more rust on this car than my Chevy pickup that is more than ten years older.

Really .I thought you told me the driver was rust free . You are talking surface rust ? No holes on the driver ? The worse thing for any car ,any place is to just sit outside . I don't care in what state either . How long before the mighty American is on the road ?

It had a water leak on both sides, after pulling the fender off on the drivers side I found a hole I am fixing that. If I ever said rust "free" I didn't mean NO rust, there are a few funkies but not bad. Besides, until I got into it I was seeing it thru rose colored glasses. :D But it really isn't bad, I think the worse thing is they undercoated it and it SUCKS to clean up and fix stuff.

Did they do factory undercoat back then ? I really can't remember if they did . It always looked good in the photos you showed . There will always be some rust in a car that old .
The only rust on my 48 Ford PU was in the bottom of all 4 fenders where the lip is . Plus a small amount under the window rubber molding but no holes there .
It came from Arizona .A Jersey one would of had a lot of rust too much salt air . It is really bad for that where I live . If you let a new brake rotor sit in the garage for a few days it will have a light film of rust . The price I pay for living close to the Ocean .

Everywhere has gives and takes, living where you are is so damn beautiful, that is but a tiny price to pay.

I wouldn't call it beautiful but it is nice . The back bays and the ocean make it nice but like anywhere it has man made crap . To me the grand canyon was beautiful as were the Redwoods . I guess any state has it's spots of beauty if you look for them .
5042 look at the beauty in the green tree line against the blue water .

Mooch I have several Ramblers and the internal cowl rust is because they left the interior part of the cowl down into the front vent area unpainted. All it had on it from the factory was the primer from the dip tank. They dipped those cars up to the roof in a big tank of primer. Of course that wouldn't stave off rust for very long so rust in the cowl area is a pretty chronic problem with the Ramblers of that era. Joe

Moocher,
There's one of those "then /than" slip ups I mentioned in that other thread.... :goof:

It will be gone for as long as I will have it. After the engine compartment is painted I will be applying a very liberal application of cavity wax. :)

As far as any of you guys need to know... Oregon is butt ugly everywhere!!

Come on now, you're just trying to keep the traffic to a minimum. I have an old friend who has flown to every state where he rents a car and tours each state for two weeks. He told me that there are only two states he would revisit Colorado and Oregon. So there... :steering:
