75 Datsun finally painted

Finally got my 75 500Z painted posting a few pics, before any rubbing out or buffing, waiting a ffew weeks before i do that. Sure wish the candy apple red and gold pearl had worked out though... Final color is Bronze metallic acrylic enamel, strips are black acrylic enamel with gold and silver marbelling all covered with 3 coats of clear

How come you used acrylic enamel then topped it with clear? Aren't you afraid the curring of the AE will act against the clear later on?
Love the wheel flairs. Did one of those cars in the late 70's and added flairs. Came out nice in a dark brown. Man was it rotted. Lots of work.

The clear topcoat is actually recommended by the paint manufacturer. Since i occasionally run methanol in the car i figured it would be a big benifit. I have used this same procedure a few times in the past and even after 7 years on my 84 BMW it still holds up fine

makes sense you get chemical and uv protection. :)

What kind of clear did you use - URETHANE clear or one made for acrylic enamel?

Years ago when Dupont made AE called Centari the also had a specific clear for acrylic enamel but has since been discontinued. Just wondering. Henry

Looks good, I always liked the early Datsuns, especially the 220 or 240Z the one with carbs, the latter had FI.


I am wondering why you used Enamel? I am about to paint a VW Rabbit and I am hung up on the base coat.

The reason i used acrylic enamel was for cost $42 for a gallon of acrylic enamel clearcoat, $145 for 2 gallons of color, 1 gallon and 1 quarts of reducer and 3 quarts hardner, for a total of about $185 and since this car is also used to autocross and run with scca events it does and will get chipped by gravel and other foreign objects which are inherantly kicked up when racing. The clear was urethane, i got both from ...paintforcars.com,(trinity 1945) when i ordered the paint and clear i got an extra gallon of paint and reducer plus hardner for future touchups, and i have already had to touch up a half dollar spot due to my son dropping a intake manifold on a high crown area of the door / fender gap... oh well had to happen some time...

i am a datsun fan but i am not familiar with the 500z. i have had 2- 240z's a couple of 280z's but have never saw a 500z

I did a google search on a 1975 Datsun 500Z and got nothing. The only two hits I got in my google search were two posts from this forum.

The numerical desgination ( 240z was a 2.4 liter engine, the 280Z was a 2.8 liter engine etc)
That would make the 500Z a 5 liter engine ???

thats it, i got tired of the old straight 6 and put in a 1988 5.0 ford roller motor, since i have to compete in modified category anyway because of the tires i run i fugured why not. It just took a little fabrication for crossmembers and suh but it is a very good fit .
I did take the time and money to register the "500Z" as a copyright in my business name so it cant be used by nissan or datsun in the future. There were plans in the works in 2008 from nissan but only got as far as rough drawings. I had all the information a while back but cant find it. The nissan 500Z was deemed unfeasable in todays market due to fuel mileage requirements.

I remember years ago looking into the "enamel" clear issue. What I found was that the "enamel" clear was actually urethane, and really no different that what was put on the basecoat of the day.

Applying the clear over the catalyzed acrylic enamel makes sense other than the application which is kind of a pain with the wait before clear coat being so long. But you have a catalyzed product with another catalyzed product over it, there is not going to be any kind of an "issue" with this in the future. It actually makes a heck of a lot more sense than the urethane clear over the uncatalyzed base coat in the typical bc/cc system!

THANK You i have tried to make that point to a lot of people, the catalysed basecoat is dry enough in 1 hour to agressively wetsand and then shoot the clear over it, i had shot candy apple red on this same car the weekend before then shot gold pearl over it the next day, didnt like how it looked and started dry sanding with 500 that same afternoon to cover it with a different color, went all the way to 1000 wet and then just waited for the new color to arrive, i have shot a lot of bc/cc in the past and couldnt have done that at all.. I have found out that the new waterbourne paints act the same way as acrylic enamel in just a little drying time but can be wet sanded the very same day. but... definetly not a fan of the new paints in that they spray completely different and the color change during drying is a BIG difference from wet to dry
