Hey all. In the process of restoring a 1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7. Just finished stripping, bodywork and priming. Body work was done with Dyna-lite and Evercoat finishing putty. Shaved door handles, side marker lights, trunk lock, and antenna. Primed with PPG DP50 and PCL Polyprimer (Black). Been out of the Body work business for about 20 years. Just looking for some BC/CC suggestions. Back in the day all I used to spray was Glasurit or R-M. Not sure how things are now. Plan to paint the car Black with Blue Pearl in the first 2 coats of clear, sand (600), have the emblems and markings done in Gold Leaf, 3 more coats of clear. Just looking for some suggestions on the best set-up since i'm sure technology has changed a lot in the last 20years. Plan on a Urethane / Poly-Urethange setup. Would like some inputs on the Best Black out there and the Best Clears. If there is something better (looks/durability) than Urethan/PolyUrethane, please let me know. Just know at the time, Glasurit was the best there was.
Thanks
Have heard that Dupont - Super Jet Black is a good base and the SPI makes a good clear, any more suggestions

Glasurit is still a top quality product. Is it the best? That's a matter of debate but it's at least up there with the best.

Be sure to use a decent spray gun (http://autobodystore.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=1D) and good breath protection (http://autobodystore.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=HP) while spraying so that you can relax and produce a good job. Raise the car up off the floor and use decent lighting on the sides and top surfaces.

When you polish you want to level the peel by color sanding with some 1500 paper (http://autobodystore.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AVSPEC&Category_Code=5SPL) then polish using a slow speed machine. It can turn out like glass.

You may what to look over the Spray Painting 101 Video (http://autobodystore.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=4VDO) to help bring you up to speed.

Nice to see a cougar! My first project car was a 69 convertible. Wish I still had it. Materials have really improved since I did it about 20 years ago with Dupont Centari acrylic enamel. Urethane basecoat/ clearcoat is definately the way to go. It is much easier to work with and much more durable than the older stuff. I have always had good results with DuPont Chroma base/7900 clear. I don't have any experience with pearls.
Good luck with the project !
