This chopped 41 Buick just arrived. It looks like a 3 or 4 month project. I'll be taking lots of pictures.

Wow only 3-4 months. My restoration has taken me over 5 years and I am still not done. :0

Nice ride. Can't wait to see the finished project.

So we started on the 41 Buick by removing the fenders, hood inner fenders and radiator support then we protected the finished frame and front suspension and started working on the sheet metal.

Looks like a really neat car . Having his shop at home has a couple of drawbacks but I believe the good out weighs the bad .

Most of the metal pieces and patches were already welded together. A lot of our work is filling the low spots and doing some minor rust work. On most of the body we are using Evercoat's new Quantum filler because it spreads smoothly and sands easily. Where we need more filling capacity we use Rage Gold first then finish with Quantum. Over seams we apply fiberglass filler to seal the seams then level them with Quantum.

A while back I had one of the largest and most successful shops in the state but circumstances changed and this became a really good choice.

I think it would be a real good choice for a lot of us. A lot of home shops turn into holes to spend every minute of our time and we loose the family-work seperation. You have to be a better businessman when you have a shop like that. It is all too common for a guy with a shop at his house to screw off more because, well, he can. Then find himself working out in the shop at 10 oclock at night instead of on the couch watching "Americas got talent" with the family.

I know because this is what I did a lot of with my shop right around the corner from my home.

Often it isn't treated like a JOB and go out there and get the friggin job done and forget about it after five-o-clock.

A lot of welding was already done quite well on this car before we got it so we just needed to grind it clean and apply a moisture resistant filler (short strand fiberglass) over the seams then we apply Rage Gold to achieve our shape and Quantum 1 to finish the filler work before we apply our spray-on coatings. After the fiberglass has hardened we usually use our Makita to shape it then apply the Rage then cheese grate it before sanding and applying more filler to get the shape we want.

Shaping the Rage Gold filler can take several coats before it's right and the Dry Guide Coat is a lot of help getting it perfect. Using the slow hardener in the Quantum gives us enough time to apply it smoothly and evenly without having to worry about it hardening before we've finished the application.

Quantum 1, eh? I was not aware of that. With a slow catalyst, it sounds like it'd be the hot tip for skimmin'.

What's the viscosity like -- say, compared to Rage Gold?

How does it act if / when ya sand through to Rage Gold?

Would the slow catalyst work as well in Rage Gold or other polyester fillers?

Len

The slow hardening is exactly what we find so appealing. We can apply it smoothly to a large area without having to worry about it hardening too quickly.

It's more liquid than Rage Gold, we use Gold to do our initial filling and we finish tweaking the surface with Quantum.

There's no sand-thru problems, it acts like any other filler.

I haven't tried using the Quantum hardener with other products but my guess is that it will probably work. I'll do some experiments in the next day or two and let you know.

Len, I was told by a local supplier the other day that the quantum fillers can only be used with the quantum hardeners. I didn't think to ask if those hardeners can be used with other fillers though.

Quantum1 and rage 1 are a polyester/epoxy bodyfiller with a 10:1hardener ratio compared to 2% with regular filler. If you can't use regular hardener in the new filler...well you get the idea,it's that junior chemist thing.I asked the evercoat rep about this when he was at our shop demoing the new fillers last year.

Len

Yep, I mixed a small amount of standard hardener with the Quantum and it hardened. Actually it hardens a lot faster with the old type hardener so I guess the Quantum hardener has less of the hardening chemical than standard hardener. When I use the Quantum I may apply it as a skim coat over a large surface and the slow hardening is real handy.

"Quantum1 uses epoxy-enriched BPO catalyst"

BPO = Benzoyl Peroxide, sometimes used in fillers advertised as waterproof. Polyester/talc fillers often use MEKP catalyst, which I think is what you all are calling "regular" hardener. Yes they interchange somewhat, but any time I see "epoxy" I follow the directions more carefully.

I don't know what the mechanics were, this thing is going to be custom from top to bottom. It even has a custom dash and rack and pinion steering.

Chrysler used this insterment cluster from 60-62
I,m not sure what year car it came from, but the dash andI/C came from the same donor car.
The owner is using a Chrysler 400 ci engine and trans.
Under the dash is a new air and heater unit, the power window motor and tracks are already installed.
Look at the pictures of the back of the car,it will have 59 caddy tail lights.
I have info on this car at home, butI,m at my second job.

We've started the reassembly process on this Buick and it should be out of here and back to the mechanic next week. As you can see the paint work came out about as close to perfect as it can get. I'm hoping to get some pictures after the car is fully assembled by the mechanic.

By the way the pictures distort the color a little, this is a very dark blue, almost black car.

Next project from this client is a chopped 40 Lincoln Zephyr. When they come to pick up this Buick they are bringing the Zepher.

The client comes and picks it up tomorrow. He will take it to his mechanic (who is an artist) where they will put it back together. I hope to get more pictures of it as it goes together but my work is done.
