Hey all I have a 70 Monte Carlo in the shop the owner has already removed the old top and I have now removed all of the rust and glue. What is the going cost would you guess for a new top at a shop? Just a guess???
What would be the best base for the top..........base/clear paint or a good epoxy primer?
Thanks

base/clear.
Cost? No idea really. $500?

A couple of coats of epoxy primer will do the trick.
I'd guess that 88GT is probably right, it will probably be around $500 but you should call a couple of trim shops in your area because they could probably give you a price on the phone.

With as much trouble as there is with rust under vinyl tops I would ( and do) go with the same quality base clear as you're using on the rest of the car.
The tops worth just around $110. http://www.opgi.com/product.asp?catmainid=6&topcatid=141&chapterid=141&grpcode=6226&ProdCode=T1088&yearrange=
I would install it myself. Takes a couple of hours and is not a difficult job. Trim shop is likely to charge around the $500 mark I think.

I don't know if I am up for trying something like that. I have no clue where to start or what to do if there is a problem.

If you have a Fisher Body manual from the late 60's early 70's it gives you step by step instructions. If you want to do it and can't lay your hands on a manual I can scan the pages from mine and send them to you along with a couple of tips that I picked up doing it.
It's not hard at all.
