Can I use leftover basecoat paint as a guide coat on 2k urethane primer?

Dries too slow and will plug up your sandpaper.

I would think it would plug up your sandpaper.

If you are guide coating a complete vehicle, you could use a different color primer for you last coat.....I use gray for my main, and white for my final coat.
Works real nice for stuff like hail damage, to find them minute dents.

If I am just doing a panel or two, or over filler repair areas, I use a 'whif' of spray bomb black laquer.

You could try the base by thinning it way down with lacquer thinner or fast reducer then spray a very light mist coat over the surface. Base is not a good choice for this task but if the base is a thin polyester material it could work however some bases are like acrylic enamel and can clog the paper quickly.

I thin it just like Len said and it works great. I do a lot of small blend jobs so I have many 1 pint cans of half empty base colors. I use a dark color over buff or light grey primer and it shows up well.
