I finally get to work on my own project. I have been pretty steady with other peoples projects this winter.

This is what I started with,

I was on the road to doing something with it here. I took the bed off it to fix the rust over the wheel arches and paint it. I had not planned on putting it back together, but we needed it for a trip and my wife was tired of driving it with no bed anyway!

I was here a week ago. This is the last picture I have. I will have to get some more shots of it tomorrow. I had to strip the light blue paint off of it because the old paint was crazed. This is okay with me, I now know what was underneath and will be confident in knowing what goes down on top.

Well here it is as of today. I should be able to get it into primer tomorrow provided I get the time. I should at least be able to get it completely ready to prime tomorrow. I will be using a DTM for the first time on this one.

Still have a bunch to do. I need to let the box cure up so it can be moved out of the booth. I'd like to shoot the front half of the truck next Monday or Tuesday.

Well, here is the cab just unmasked and backed out of the booth. It went extremely well with almost no peel, which is making the sand and buff go that much easier.

Here is the cab reunited with the box. Went on with no scratches this time around.

I am in the process of completing the sand and buff job and will post pictures once the truck is all back together which should be near the end of next week. I hope to have new tires mounted on my wheels soon so I can ditch the stock wheels.

I managed to get the hood polished. I should have taken this picture inside, you can barely tell it is black. I have not figured out why the picture did that at the bottom... I like the clean reflection even if the gguy holding the camera looks goofy.

I pretty much have it all put together now. I would like to replace a few parts to go with the fresh paint, but they will have to wait for funds. Tires should be on pretty soon along with the lowering parts I have for it. I am not doing anything too radical for the drop just 2" in the front and 4" in the rear, pretty basic stuff.

Wow! I'm a Ford guy and like lifted trucks, but I have to say that GMC looks awesome. I really like your color scheme. Beautiful work!

MeanGreen- As Len said, you have options for next time! I too have always been a "Ford Guy". That is until discovered these trucks. My first was an all black 95 Z71 and the second being this one. I had an old body style Suburban which I really wanted to do up, but it was way too rusty to save. My list of Ford vehicles is long, my list of GM vehicles amounts to about 5 or 6. The 88-98 GM Truck is (for me at least) the tri five Chevy I can afford.

Aside from some minor loose ends to tie up before I go to the St. Ignace car show towards the end of the month I am now 98% complete!

Very clean and tasteful looking. I like the two-tone scheme you chose. What color is the dividing stripe?

Mine's all red and I was thinking of going with a two-tone like yours, black up top and red below with a gold dividing stripe. Or the opposite. Still haven't made up my mind. How far did you take the black into the door frame, door edges, and under the hood on the fenders?

The orange I used is Sunfire Orange, it is a custom color out of a book the supplier had. It looks very similar to the newer Corvette Atomic Orange.

I replaced a 22" section on one rocker with a piece I hand formed, the outer wheel well lips on the bed, patched one fender lip up front, and replaced the driver side fender with a new one. Once I got into the body work I found that the cab corners had been poorly done prior to my owning the truck, so I fixed what they butchered and all was good.

The black and blue both go into the door jambs and the inside of the doors. The black carries over the top of the fender to the inside flange, it is blue from under the flange down on the inner fender. I left the orange just on the outside of the body. I followed the body line top and bottom for the stripe. That stripe was a serious pain to tape off, but the result was worth it. I spent quite a bit of time getting it right, almost chucked the idea at one point, I walked away from it for a bit and then came back and it laid down the way I wanted.

Your color combo should be pretty cool. I personally like the look of the black on top. I was up in the air on the blue, I wavered for a bit between it and some sort of silver or metallic gray before making my decision. I actually planned on repainting it all the blue color at one time and had already purchased enough color for the truck and painted the bed last year! I wound up with a bunch of left over black from an Explorer, so I picked up another quart of that and a pint of the orange once I decided what to do.

St. Ignace will be a good time. I look forward to it every time we go and never regret the trip afterwords, this will be my fourth time since first going (on purpose) in 03. I used to see the cars in the late 80's when I would go up to spend time with my grandmother near Houghton and never new it was that big a deal. One of these days I want to go to the Iola, WI show, I have heard good things about that one as well. Be sure to say hi if you see us out and about.

I was just cruising through the forum and looked at my old thread and realized I never put up completed pictures... I thought about skipping it since I sold the truck, but what the heck. Might as well finish the thread even thought it has been nearly 2 years. Here it is all lowered and with the topper painted and put on. People have seen it at our local car shows and tell me it is still the same and looked well cared for.

That is a very nice and clean job! I love that generation
of GM trucks, I'm doing an '89 Scottsdale now and really
like the lines on the Chevys/GMCs then. My question is, how
hard was it to get the bed off and how did you lift it off?

Thanks! The bed is held on by bolts going up through the frame, I think there are 8 of them in total 4 per side. Lifting it off was easy, I just rounded up 3 guys to lift it off one at each corner of the bed! I unhooked the light wiring from the bed, disconnected the filler neck for the gas tank, and there is also a ground strap under there somewhere (I think near the cab).
