Hey guys, I have been looking around for a while trying to do some research on a gun that would suit my needs and I think I have narrowed it down. I have narrowed it down to a few different models of the devilbiss gun but need some help making my final decision. First I will be spraying a high build primer. Would the finish line 3 be a good gun with the 1.8 tip? Or I have a some guns at my disposal, one is an old school cheap bottom fed gun and the other is I think a husky hvlp. Would either of those get the job done and just change out the tip? Now on to the bc/cc. I was looking at the 620g or 670g. I will only be using it for bc/cc and maybe a 2 stage paint later on. Got about 5-6 cars to do over the next year or so, so I would like to get a pretty good gun but I dont really have $500+ to spend on one. Thanks for any help and feel free to flame me for another gun post.

You've got the right idea... the Finishline III is a good choice for primer but I think that most primers can be sprayed with a smaller tip for best results. I would rather use a 1.5 to 1.7 (max) for most primers and shoot polyester spray filler using a 1.8 to 2.2. I don't use bottom feed guns anymore unless it's for a special reason. If you can afford the Finishline III it will serve you well.
As far as a top coat gun goes, the GFG670-G is an excellent choice it atomizes well and will spray both single and two stage paints with the tips that are included with the gun.

Thanks for the info! I guess I will be getting the finishline 3 then when I am ready to shoot the primer. And the 670g will do fine with the clear too?

I think that I would just use your Husky hvlp for your primer right now. It doesn't have to be laid perfectly flat since you are going to sand it off anyway. As long as you have an hvlp gun to save material and overspray then your set. That gun probably goes for about $100 at Home Depot if it is the newer model. That gun may even spray a topcoat decent but I wouldn't try. Also, I doubt that Husky makes their guns, so it is probably made by one big manufacturer that puts different names on their guns. Just my opinion but it seems like it would fit the bill well for primer and you could save that $100 towards the nice Devilbiss Plus.

I may just use it then and just get 1 gun for now. I think that husky was around $100. We have painted a couple of motorcycles, and primered a car with that gun and it does alright with the primer. There isnt much on a bike but it did ok for a garage job shooting the base and clear. It takes a little more finish work to look nice but I think the old bottom fed gun did a better job of shooting the base.

ive been using the devilbiss finishline III FLG-653G-13 for a while now..very happy with it..bought in the master kit..has a 1.3 1.5 1.8 & a 2.2 tips with it & the gun regulator & tools all in a plastic hard case..although i am looking into an iwata or sata to add to my collection:D
I echo lens advice, but if you intend to spray epoxy based primer the
1.8 tip would be a better choice imho. Regular build primer a 1.4mm tip
will be ok.
On the gfg-670 gun its excellent for both clear/base and ss. Using either a 1.3 tip or 1.4 tip will yeild good results.
If your looking for the very best gun on the market go for the IWATA lph400-144lv gun. Its got low input air requirements and offers good atomization
of the paint with low overspray. Its pretty amazing. 18psi in yeilds a large fan
of 12 to 15 inch..
Best of luck on your project.
