I have some trim lines that I want to fill in that run around the roof line of my '31 Model A. They are about 1/8" deep by 3/4" and have 1/8" holes all the way around. I could weld the holes but it would take weeks so I wanted a filler that I could put in there. The local autobody shop suggested I use Evercoat Poly-Flex:

I'm reading that this is just for skim coating not build-up, any ideas what I could use or if this will be okay??

Thanks,
Sean

if your not going to weld up the holes i would try a fiberglass type bondo. use that aluminum tape behind the holes and fill over. clean the roof lines real good and scuff, then use the fiberglass filler. sand and then finish with a smooth skim coat of regular filler. it's best if you can weld the holes.

I've found that these types of repairs usually hold up better if you don't allow the filler to go through the holes. I like to see a picture of the situation before I recommended a procedure but I'd probably cover the holes with aluminum tape on the filler side then fill the channel using a good quality moisture resistant filler. When using the foil tape be sure to cut it so that it covers the hole and overlaps the metal then push it down onto the surface using a hard object, this will help it bond well. Be sure that the surface and the foil tape are both textured so that it has some tooth to help hold the filler in place. Press the first pass of filler into the tooth of the surface then continue to fill the channel, this helps the filler bond well with the surface.

Like I said I may change this method based on pictures but it sounds like this will do the trick.

I realize that you holes are smaller but I think the same application applies but it could change depending on the job variables.

Thanks a lot Len, you can see the trim along the roof line at the bottom of the page here:

It's really hard to get at the back side but I think I should take your advise and get in there somehow.

Thanks again,
Sean

I can't see the pics. Can't you cover the holes from the front the apply filler?
