I received a free used compressor from a friend. My problem is I don't know the cfm rating for it. It was used for a meat wrapping machine in a supermarket. The compressor is a Dayton (never heard of them) and it works great for me (smooth, quick fill up) when I use my nailer, ratchet, nibbler, and cut off wheel.

I was hoping if I gave my stats, someone could give me a ballpark figure for my cfm's.

-30-33 gallons (did some volume calculations)
-230V 5hp
-Two pistons (the compressor measures 14" in height)
-Uses oil
-Only 3/8" steel tubing and hosing are used from compressor to gun.
-The flywheel on the motor is 3.5" in diameter, and 14" on the compressor (I think Len mentioned that these measures may matter).

I really want to know if I can get away with using an HVLP to paint my CJ7 Jeep (Wrangler style). I know 60gal is the way to go, but I was thinking that being my Jeep doesn't have a lot of metal, I may be able to get away with it. There's no roof or trunk area, and the widest part of the body is about 16 inches tall. The hood is the largest part, and that isn't a giant either.

I'm looking to buy a Devilbiss gun for about $150.

So does anyone have an educated guess on my cfm's; and can I use an hvlp gun with it (I'm looking for 'good' results, I understand my limitations and inexperience).

Thanks,
Pete.

Grainger (http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/start.shtml) sells alot of Dayton Products. I know cause we use them as a supplier at the plant where I work.

I would check out that website and look up compressors there (somewhere on the machine has to be some identifying tags). If you can't find anything on the Website give Grainger's Customer Support a call. They should be able to

a) Help with identifying the machine
b) Get parts and a manual
