How close to an area that has been constructed/repaired with bonding materials can I plug weld? 2"?
The plug welding will burn away the adhesive qualities of the bonding material. I probably wouldn't get closer than an inch but it will depend on how quickly you can do your welding. The quicker the plug weld is done the less heat you will transmit across the panel and the closer you can get with the bonding materials. An inch would be the closest but if your welds take longer you may need to keep the adhesive further away.

the current project is rebuilding the "pickup bed" of an IH Scout II. I can leave 2" without compromise. And I am typically plug welding 16 guage to 16 guage in 1/4 holes.

I don't know if Len sells it but there is an anti-heat compound that works rather well. Just spread it around the weld area and it keeps the heat confined. It is like a putty and is reusable .I use it and it does work. Mooch

Hey Mooch; how did you discover this anti-heat potion? Shoul have spread some on your butt........ If it were last year I would not have said that. Just seemed funny coming from you after your incident. All in fun good buddy. Henry

really? My snap on dealer is trying to push that stuff on me and i wasn't buying it.
The paste that Mooch is refering to is more for a heat barrier to stop the metal from warping. I've never found a use for it when plug welding because the heat is started and stopped so quickly. Back when we were gas welding and brazing that heat barrier was much more useful.

You are correct Len and that is when I used it a lot. I still use it when doing water pipes in my filter room so some close joints dont come loose.
